Billionaire John Farrington is obsessed with the idea of offending God to the point that God would want to confront him in person. Farrington has abducted priests and nuns to commit sexual atrocities with the most grievously genetically deformed people he can find. People that he's also abducted and kept in such a high state of sexual intensity, with a drug his company produces, that they are just ravenous for physical contact. The abductees, with basically no self control, commit some of the most depraved sex acts, over, and over again. Westmore and Bryant, a photographer and journalist, are given the rare opportunity to interview the reclusive Farrington and see inside his mansion and operation. Only to find the horrors within, and who have become pawns in the mysteries they find behind every door. Farmington's plan may work, and to make sure he's successful, he will do whatever it takes to have the deity of man face him.

What happens when Edward Lee and Wrath James White, authors of some of the most extreme of the extreme horror genre, come together for a collaboration? You get The Teratologist, a novella about packing as much bizarre filth as possible into about 120 pages. Page after page is spent describing creative new ways for the pious and the most grievously deformed to have sex with each other. Sinister multibillionaire Farringworth is kidnapping religious figures and extreme genetic accidents and injecting them full of powerful aphrodisiacs so they would engage in any sex act no matter how depraved. He films these acts then anonymously leaks them to the public to destroy the faith people had in these religious figures. Why? So he can offend God enough that God would make a personal appearance. Into this strange plot come Westmore and Bryant, a magazine photographer and reporter respectively, who are the only ones in any position to stop Farringworth. There was much for me to enjoy about this book. Our protagonists are clear stand-ins for Lee and White, with Westmore being a white hard-drinking existentialist Christian slob and Bryant being a black tee totaling atheist kick boxer. It's a combination that works, with both of them being very compelling to watch in how they deal with the situation. Our antagonist is really something. Eccentric, charismatic, and utterly depraved, Farringworth is one of the nastiest villains I've read about in recent times and a far cry from Lee's usual killer rednecks. This man is willing to bring untold horror and suffering to the most pious people he can find so that he can meet God in person. It's vaguely similar to Clive Barker's short story Down, Satan! where a man creates his private Hell on Earth to meet Satan. Then there's the parade of freaks and saints, forced into all sorts of horrible acts. Lee and White exhaust their imaginations coming up with new ways to describe the worst deformities on record, and the things you can do with them. It's hard to imagine that any reader would find this erotic, but it works as horror perfectly well. You will not forget these scenes easily. The religious themes are interesting since it's very rare for Lee to acknowledge any faith outside of Roman Catholicism (although Judaism played a heavy role in his Golemesque). We have an unnamed angel (in a nod toward Lee's Hell books) explaining how all religions come from a single god that, to the protagonists at least, resembles the Abrahamic god, yet it is the Japanese Buddhist, Sato Masaaki, who shows the strongest faith and discipline of anyone.
As much as I liked The Teratologist, I had to take a star off for a few flaws that stood out to me. Early on, Farringworth's butler and accomplice Michaels gets down and willingly licks semen and feces off Farringworth's penis, yet nowhere else in the book does he show that kind of devotion or love toward his boss. Michaels is clearly repulsed by the freaks and thinks Farringworth is a lunatic, and it's not like Farringworth demanded Michaels clean his penis his mouth. It's just another gross moment that doesn't mesh with the rest of the story. Much worse is the rushed ending. The end of the penultimate chapter and all of the final chapter are slammed out with a major character acting contrary to how he did before, with a weak justification coming a little later. That was just glaring to me, and hurt the book for me.

The Teratologist eBook Edward Lee Wrath James White Travis Anthony Soumis Reviews
If you are easily offended and/or sensitive about what you read, you will definitely want to skip this book.
I have recently discovered Edward Lee, and I am simply blown away. This book is gross, gory, obscene, disgusting, twisted and brutal. I couldn't put it down! It is a short book, around 125 pages, and I tore through it in less than two hours. If you are easily offended and/or sensitive about what you read, you will definitely want to skip this book. However, If you enjoy this type of extreme, hardcore horror, and have a strong stomach, read this book. You won't be disappointed!
I was offically grossed out 2 pages into the book. This book is very interesting and a page turner how the authors were able to stomach what they wrote is beyond me. To sum it up this book is about a man quest to have a face to face meeting with God but that doesn't work out and the man has a meeting with someone else. In the process he discovers a drug that makes people have sex and lots of it. In the process this man does some of the most heinous acts to people. If you have a weak stomach and get grossed out easily this is NOT the book for you. For everyone else Enjoy.
The Teratologist falls under the category of what I would call the general Edward Lee mythos- the Earth as we know it, but where evil and acts of evil generate great power. I say "general" mythos as opposed to his Lovecraftian and redneck horror story lines.
The Lee mythos, where the fallen angel Lucifer is behind all evil in the world and humans can gain His favor, is behind many of the author's stories; most popular in the Infernal series. While the Teratologist wouldn't be considered part of Lee's Infernal series understanding that world explains all the motivation behind the wicked acts you become a witness to.
What I loved about this work is almost the entire story takes place with the reader stuck inside of a single location-- this gives an eerie sense to the environment.
Totally unbelievably gross gross gross! But yet I kept reading and give it a 4. Lol. I consider myself pretty twisted when it comes to books and movies and this is by far the most twisted disgusting book I've ever read. The sexually deviant (and that's putting it mildly) stuff was such a freak show you almost can't help but laugh but then think you're sick for laughing! I didn't give it 5 stars because I do not like books or movies that combine very sick things with religion and this did. It also got too out there for my taste. But it's a short read so it flowed well for me.
Edward Lee and Wrath James White go over the top in this novella.
A self-made billionaire has achieved life's pursuits in easy fashion. But, he wants more. And, to get wants he wants, he needs to get God's attention...God's personal attention. He is willing to commit the most depraved, vile and evil acts in an attempt to force God to have to reveal himself.
A warning on this one the acts he commits are truly depraved, vile and evil. This is a very disturbing book.
3 1/2 STARS
I keep hoping that one day Edward Lee will really write something that will shock me, or at least make me afraid to turn off the lights before I go to bed. Sadly that day has not yet come. Lee certainly gets the "splashy" effect he's looking for, in that he comes up with some vile ideas. His books are executed in such a sophomoric way, with equally sophomoric language, that it ruins any real terror that could be crafted in the reader to go along with his vile ideas. Don't get me wrong; I keep reading his books, and they are certainly great for entertainment value. For me he is like the SyFy B-rate movie king of the book world. This one was meh, and sort of short (only 194 pages). If you have a free hour or two and want to knock out something that doesn't require much effort, then this is a good choice.
